Huntington Library Institute for the ART of TEACHING Begins

By Cotsen Staff, Cotsen Foundation for the ART of TEACHING —

The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens hosted a special two-week institute for the Primary Source Network and other Cotsen teachers interested in the use of primary sources in social studies.

Held the first two weeks in August the institute, “California’s Place in American History,” focused during the first week on significant eras in California history while the second examined U.S. history from the Revolution to the Civil War. Professor William Deverell of USC and the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West led the institute, which included guest presenters from the Huntington’s curatorial and library staffs, and scholars from the Institute on California and the West.

Teachers enhanced their learning about the use of primary sources drawn from the Huntington’s collections, and they identified documents, photos, and art works for possible digitizing that would be of particular interest to elementary teachers.
