ART of TEACHING Participant School District Named Second Most Improved in California

Recently, GreatSchools named Whittier City School District California’s second most improved school district in 2012, citing its substantially improved test scores over the last three years. The district’s considerable improvement has been attributed to an increase in collaboration and teacher-leadership, including the establishment of professional learning communities and curricular improvement teams led by teachers.

Four years ago, Cotsen Foundation for the ART of TEACHING selected Whittier City School District to participate in the ART of TEACHING program. Since 2009, the ART of TEACHING has been active in several elementary schools within the district, including Andrews, Hoover, Mill, Orange Grove, and Phelan and has directly worked with more than thirty teachers from the district.

The Cotsen Foundation for the ART of TEACHING congratulates Whittier City School District for its accomplishments and for their emphasis on collaborative, ongoing, teacher development in support of student learning.
